In common composite structures, the outer PET layer serves primarily for printing and external protection, the middle aluminum (AL) foil acts as a barrier against external elements, and the inner PE layer comes into direct contact with the food.
Thickness is a crucial factor in product protection. Insufficient thickness can result in a flimsy bag prone to punctures, seal failures, or inadequate bottom support, while excessive thickness drives up costs. A total thickness of 120 micrometers (4.72 mil / 0.12 mm) is generally recommended.
The standard material configuration for the Gold Stand-up Pouch is PET (outer) / AL (barrier) / PE (inner) with a total thickness of 120 micrometers. This offers a balanced combination of product protection and cost-efficiency, making it suitable for everyday food products such as coffee, tea, and snacks.
The PET / NY / AL / PE configuration offers enhanced protection; the NY (nylon) layer improves puncture and tear resistance, thereby increasing overall durability. Printing Structures and Methods for Gold Stand-Up Pouches
For low-volume orders requiring custom printing, surface printing is recommended; this method involves printing ink directly onto the outermost layer of the finished stand-up pouch. The process is simple and significantly reduces costs. However, a drawback is the lack of a protective layer, meaning the ink may flake off due to prolonged friction or creasing.
Reverse printing involves printing the design before the lamination process takes place. The ink is protected beneath an outer transparent film, offering excellent scratch and abrasion resistance—thereby preventing ink flaking or wear—making it the most common printing structure on the market.
Digital printing is also an ideal choice for low-volume orders, typically ranging from 500 to 5,000 units. Utilizing a reverse printing technique, the digital press prints directly onto the inner side of the outer PET film. This method offers high flexibility for small quantities and eliminates the cost of producing gravure cylinders. However, for very large quantities, the average unit price becomes higher than that of gravure printing.
Gravure printing is generally recommended for quantities exceeding 5,000 units. Since there are initial costs for cylinder production, higher volumes allow these costs to be amortized across each stand-up pouch, resulting in a lower unit cost.
